[U.S.S. Vermont and the U.S. occupation of Veracruz during the Mexican Revolution photograph album]

Abstract:

Album of snapshot and commercial views chiefly taken during the United States invasion and occupation of Veracruz, Mexico in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. Views depict U.S. Navy soldiers assigned to the Vermont during training exercises, miscellaneous activities aboard the ship, largely involving officers, and battle scenes in the streets of Veracruz, including combat, damaged buildings and war casualties. Also includes tourist views of the region -- likely taken during the occupation -- depicting bullfights, city views, baseball games between U.S. Navy and Mexican teams; officers and their quarters aboard the ship; and Gulf of Mexico scenes, a few depicting naval aircraft. Most scenes of battle and the Mexican Revolution were taken by commercial photographers, while snapshot scenes pertaining the U.S. Navy were likely taken by an officer of the U.S.S. Vermont. Also includes a series of views apparently taken in the Canal Zone of Panama, many depicting construction of a portion of the Panama Canal. A few views of U.S. Navy training aboard the U.S.S. Montgomery on the sea near Annapolis, Maryland, not adhered in the album, are stored separately (in PIC folder).
